The Skookumchuck Creek is situated in the Kootenay region of British Columbia and runs from high in the Purcell Mountains to meet the Kootenay River in the valley below. Skookumchuck literally means "strong water" or rapids and the creek has become known as having some of the provinces's best Class III to IV whitewater rapids.
Dewar Creek drains from the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy into the Columbia Valley and is a popular river destination for its whitewater rafting and undeveloped hot springs. Accessed via the St. Mary Lake Forestry Road.
St. Mary's Lake is a 15-minute drive south of Kimberley, off highway 95A. The lake offers excellent catch and release fishing and fly-fishing. The lake's trout population is stocked by the Kootenay Trout Hatchery.
Originating high in the Purcell Mountains of British Columbia, the St. Mary flows eastward until it empties into Kootenay River. Just outside of Kimberley, BC, the river pools into St. Mary Lake. Below St. Mary Lake the river is joined by several tributaries, each adding significantly to the St. Mary's flow before converging with Kootenay River.
